    Average Income

    • Housekeepers do not require formal education and may learn skills necessary to do their jobs while working. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says that the average annual income of housekeepers and maids in May 2010 was $21,150. This translates to an average hourly income of $10.17. The median annual income of workers in the occupation was $19,300, which translates to a median income of $9.28. In other words, half of all workers in the occupation made more than $9.28 an hour while half earned less.

    Income Range

    • Bureau of Labor Statistics data show that the top 10 percent of income earners among housekeepers and maids earned $14.19 or more an hour in May 2010 while the bottom 10 percent of income earners made $7.68 or less. Workers in the bottom 10 percent of income earners received $15,980 or less per year. Half of all workers in the occupation earned between $8.34 and $11.31 an hour.

    Top Industries

    • The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that 865,960 workers were housekeepers and maids in May 2010, 403,890 of which worked in the travel accommodation industry. Workers in travel accommodation earned $9.93 on average. Housekeepers that worked for general medical and surgical hospitals earned $11.13 an hour on average while workers providing services to buildings and dwellings earned $9.82 an hour.

    Top States

    • According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the states where housekeepers and maids earned the highest hourly wages in May 2010 were the District of Columbia, Hawaii and New York. Workers in these states made $13.79 or more an hour on average. Nevada has the highest concentration of housekeepers and maids of any state; workers in Nevada earned $12.43 an hour on average.
