Aromatherapy can be a great alternative to painkillers when it comes to relieving migraine headache pain.
All pain medications have side effects that that run the gamut from gastrointestinal disorders to death.
And to make things worse, drugs can also cause serious health disorders that are sometimes worse than the headache pain itself.
Plus, even when painkillers work at their absolute best it's only a temporary aid.
They may take away a headache this time, but they won't do anything to prevent the next one.
And just because it relieved some pain this time doesn't mean it will offer any relief next time.
Pain pills can also be addicting.
People that take too many pain medicines can become addicted to them.
Some prescription drugs are especially addictive and may require hospitalization to achieve withdrawal in some cases.
And the withdrawal symptoms can be much worse than headache pain.
However, it's not just strong prescription drugs that people get hooked on, but over-the-counter drugs as well.
Research has shown that two out of every three chronic headache sufferers will get headaches from the drugs themselves.
When a person takes too many painkillers it can lead to an addiction where the drugs are actually causing the headache pain instead of relieving it.
If a chronic sufferer takes painkillers for a headache and the headache goes away, they will naturally stop taking the painkillers.
However, once the effect of the pain medication has worn off, the headache returns as a type of withdrawal symptom of the medication.
Often, even when painkillers do alleviate the pain it can leave a person feeling tired and fully drained of energy.
Due to the negative effects that drugs may cause, many people nowadays are looking for safer and more natural approaches to relieving migraine headache pain.
One treatment that is fairly popular is aromatherapy.
Aromatherapy is one alternative to taking potentially dangerous and addictive drugs for a migraine headache pain.
Aromatherapy involves using essential oils which are extracted from certain plants.
There are several ways that these essential oils can be used, but one easy way is to simply rub it on painful areas such as the temples.
Peppermint oil is a good one to use in this way.
Essential oils such as sweet marjoram can be added to warm bath water where they can penetrate the skin.
Additionally the aroma can be inhaled.
Many methods of use involve inhaling the aroma from various essential oils.
This is done by using a diffuser or other methods.
One cheap way to use essential oils instead of buying a diffuser is to put about 3 or 4 drops of it into a large bowl of hot water.
Close your eyes, place your face over the bowl, and breathe the fragrance for about 5 minutes.
This is not recommended for people with asthma, but can give migraine relief to others.
Another method is to put several drops on a compress and place it in a tender area.
Aromatherapy can often give safe natural relief without the use of drugs.
However, it will not work for everyone.
But that's the good thing about natural painkilling methods; they're safe, so if one doesn't work there is always another one that can be checked out.
By testing out different natural treatment methods it's most likely just a matter of time before you can find one that works for you.
