Put Kangaroo Island on the Top of Your List When Visiting the Adelaide Area
It's located 112 km from the metropolitan city of Adelaide which makes it easy for anyone wanting to visit this beautiful island.
The largest town on Kangaroo Island is Kingscote which was known as Reeves Point when it functioned as a settlement area in 1836 for Europeans.
Its name was altered when a proposal was made that the town become South Australia's capital.
Sadly this did not happen because Kingscote didn't have sufficient resources to sustain its increasing population.
Instead, Adelaide became the capital of South Australia.
Much of the economy is derived from farming.
This includes sheep grazing; grain, canola and potato farming; and beef farming.
The island is well known for its high quality beef from cattle that are raised within the high rainfall regions.
Tourism as well as the fishing industry are also significant for the economy.
Kangaroo Island is visited by 140,000 people annually.
About 25 percent of them are European tourists.
The island is famous for the unequaled size of the southern rock lobsters that are caught off the coastline.
South Australia's only producer of eucalyptus oil is found on the Island.
The local weather is temperate in this part of the world.
June - September are the winter months which are wet and mild.
October - May are the summer months which are warm and dry.
Summer temperatures hover around 25C as a result of cooling sea breezes.
Winter can be quite chilly with temperatures around the 13 to 16C mark.
You'll want to pack a jersey if you're visiting at this time of the year.
Roughly half the island is covered with vegetation.
One quarter is comprised of wilderness protection regions, national parks, and conservation parks.
These include Cape Bouguer Wilderness Protection Area, the Flinders Chase National Park, Ravine des Casoars Wilderness Protection Area, and Gantheaume Conservation Park.
All are popular visiting sites.
At Seal Bay you can take a guided walk to observe sea lions basking in the sun.
During a visit to Flinders Chase National Park, you will see the Remarkable Rocks.
These massive boulders are incredibly sculpted by Mother Nature.
Other places of interest are the Kelly Hill Caves, Cape Willoughby, and the enormous sand dunes at Little Sahara.
Watch endearing penguins at the Kangaroo Island Penguin Center in Kingscote.
And for a amazing abundance of bird life, visit Murray Lagoon.
On Mount Thisby you will find a lookout which was constructed in 2002 as a mark of respect to Matthew Flinders who was the first navigator to circumnavigate Australia.
From the lookout you can see breathtaking 360 degree views.
Kangaroo Island accommodation is bountiful.
It is possible to rent a beach cottage at Emu Bay, Snelling Beach, Stokes Bay or Island Beach.
There are a number of backpackers' establishments where you can share comfortable inexpensive accommodation.
These facilities have fully equipped kitchens, large living rooms, and a dining room.
