Ideas for Contemporary Bathroom Remodeling

    Sunken Tubs

    • Traditionally, bathtubs are raised--the water level always is higher than the floor when the tub is in use. The problem with this design is that it disturbs the straight visual line of the room, making it appear smaller. Sinking the tub so the surface is at ground level eliminates this problem. A sunken tub also can be easier to access, because the user can simply step down into or up from the bath.

    Skylights and Hanging Fixtures

    • Bathrooms are notorious for harsh fluorescent lighting. A skylight provides softer, more natural illumination to the room. Similarly, hanging fixtures bring the lights down closer to where it is needed, decreasing the need for high-watt bulbs. Antique-looking hanging fixtures that use low-watt candle bulbs can add an elegant look.

    Cabinets and Cubbies

    • Cabinets and cubbies in bathrooms typically are made from wood. This doesn't make a lot of sense, since the bathroom is one of the most humid rooms of a house, and moisture can warp wood. Replace your cabinets and cubbies for stainless steel versions. This material cleans easily, won't warp like wood and provides sleek lines. If the stainless steel appears too stark for you, temper the metallic feel with some flower vases on the vanity.

    Island

    • Tubs, showers and vanities usually are placed around the walls of the bathroom. This has the advantage of leaving the middle of the room open. However, if your bathroom is large enough, create an island in the center of the room for the tub and sink(s). This keeps the walls more accessible for decorating and creates the illusion of a more circular space.
