History is made everyday. When we look back at the music-related events that transpired over the years, we come to appreciate all the men and women who helped shape music history. Composers, conductors, musicians, vocalists, songwriters, inventors, etc. all these creative people have left their mark and many of them serve as inspirations for us to this day. Let's take a look at several important events in music that happened for the month of January.


January 1, 1782 - Johann Christian Bach died in London. He was the youngest son of Johann Sebastian and his second wife, Anna Magdalena and is known as the "English Bach."

January 2, 1905 - Michael Tippett was born in London, England. He was a conductor, music director and one of the leading British composers of the 20th century. He wrote string quartets, symphonies and operas, including The Midsummer Marriage which was produced in 1952.

January 3, 1967 - Mary Garden died in a town called Inverurie in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. She made her debut in 1900 in Gustave Charpentier's Louise. It was in 1902 where she became renowned when Claude DeBussy handpicked her for the female lead of his opera Pelléas et Mélisande.

January 4, 1868 - The Black Crook, a musical comedy by playwright Charles M. Barras, closed after running a total of 475 performances.

January 5, 1649 - The opera Giasone by Francesco Cavalli premiered in Venice. Cavalli was one of Monteverdi's pupils who later became organist and then maestro di cappella at St.

Mark's. He became one of the foremost Venetian opera composers after Monteverdi passed away.

January 6, 1838 - Max Bruch was born in Cologne, Prussia (Germany). He was notable for his violin concerti. He was also a conductor of orchestral and choral societies and became a professor at the Berlin Academy of Arts.

January 6, 1993 - Dizzy Gillespie died in Englewood, New Jersey due to pancreatic cancer. He is considered one of the founding fathers of jazz and one of the inventors of bebop.

January 7, 1899 - Francis Poulenc was born in Paris, France. He was one of the important French composers after World War 1 and member of "Les Six." His "Les biches" was commissioned by Diaghilev, the producer of the Ballet Rouse, under the recommendations of Stravinsky.

January 8, 1713 - Arcangelo Corelli died in Rome, Italy. He was a virtuoso violinist, accomplished composer and teacher during the Baroque period. His 12 Concerti Grossi was published in 1714, a year after he died.

January 9, 1961 - Connie Francis was honored on NBC-TV's This Is Your Life. She appeared and won on Arthur Godfrey's Startime Talent Scout Show when she was 10. It was Godfrey who advised Connie to change her name to something shorter and more memorable. Since then she has used the name Connie Francis.

January 10, 1945 - Roderick David Stewart, famously known as Rod Stewart, was born in London, England.

January 11, 1924 - Guitar and harmonica musician James Moore, popularly known as Slim Harpo, was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

January 12, 1963 - The song "Go Away Little Girl," written by Carole King/Gerry Goffin and recorded by Steve Lawrence, was on top of the charts. Singer-songwriter Carole King is the artist behind hits like "So Far Away" and "It's Too Late" and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1987.

January 13, 1916 - "Carol of the Bells," originally titled Shchedryk, was first performed in the Ukraine.

January 14, 1676 - Francesco Cavalli died in Venice, Italy. He was one of the most influential Italian opera composers during the 17th century.

January 15, 1964 - Jazz trombonist, Weldon Leo "Jack" Teagarden, passed away in New Orleans.
