A Guide to Self-Defense for Women
We know that this is not always true, but physically, men are stronger.
This is the reason that women should learn basic self-defense for safety.
Women are sometimes not safe outside and inside the home.
Abusive boyfriends and husbands are mostly the ones contributing to violent acts against women.
Why Learn Self-Defense? • Because men are stronger physically and you should not be helpless when you are with them.
• When a crime or violent act is being committed, you only have yourself as defense.
• You do not want to end up as a victim of violence.
• Defense is better than terror, anxiety or stress over what can happen to you.
• Defense is easier to learn than learning to cope with being a victim of violence.
General Tips • Use your common sense.
Awareness is your main defense against violence.
Be alert, and always listen to your gut and intuition.
Avoid listening to mp3 players or talking over the phone when walking alone at night.
These things can lessen your awareness of your surroundings.
Learn to observe the goings-on around you.
If you see something suspicious, do not let yourself be left alone.
• Use your body as a weapon.
Even if you do not know martial arts, there are parts of your body you can readily use as weapons against a criminal.
Use your hands to grab and inflict pain on soft muscle tissues such as the underside of the arm or scratch the eyes of the attacker.
Your elbows are very powerful weapons.
If you use them in the right way, you can hit the ribs, diaphragm, sternum, groin, or throat.
Then, the strongest part of a woman's body is the knees.
You can counterattack on the legs or groin.
When all else fails, use your teeth.
Anywhere you can reach and bite will hurt and will cause your attacker to pause.
Just beware if there is bleeding because there is a risk of getting an infectious disease from the criminal.
• Use your brain.
Try to avoid putting yourself in dangerous situations such as walking alone in an alleyway at night or going to a party with guys and getting drunk.
It will also not hurt to always be prepared.
Make sure you have a personal alarm for emergencies and that you always carry a spray, just in case.
