    Create Moccasin Pattern

    • 1). Place the foot roughly in the center of the sheet of white paper. Trace a loose outline of the foot with a pencil. Hold the pencil straight up and down as you trace to leave excess room around the outline for comfort.

    • 2). Measure a 1/2-inch curved line around the edge of the toes at all points. Hold a ruler next to the left side of the foot. Draw a 1/2-inch parallel line from the edge starting at the curved toe line and down the length of the foot to the bottom of the paper. Repeat this procedure on the right side so that the distance between the two parallel lines measures at least 4 1/2-inches.

    • 3). Find the center point between the two parallel lines. Use a ruler to draw a straight line through the outline of the foot and down the center from the top of the paper to the bottom. Measure 1 inch from the bottom of the heel toward the bottom of the paper. Draw a straight line across the paper so that it is perpendicular to the outline of the foot.

    • 4). Measure the length of the foot from the ankle to the heel to determine the location of the foot insert. Assume that the bottom of the pattern reflects the location of the heel. Move toward the center from the bottom of the pattern, and mark the length of the distance between the ankle and heel with a dot on the center line. Measure 5 inches toward the toe from the ankle line, and connect the dots. This line will serve as the insert in the top of the leather in which to place the foot. Draw a 2-inch perpendicular line from the top of this line for extra insert room.

    • 5). Attach an additional sheet of paper to the left side of the pattern with tape. Fold the pattern on the 1/2-inch left edge so that the newly taped paper is underneath the drawn pattern. Some of the newly attached paper will exceed the borders of the original paper on the right side.

    • 6). Cut away the excess paper around the toes, side and bottom. Do not cut out the left side. Unfold the pattern so that it now resembles two large hills attached to one another. The additional paper, or hill, will provide enough room so that the fabric will wrap around and cover the entire foot, acting as both the sole and the top.

    Construct Mocassins

    • 1). Transfer the unfolded pattern to the leather. Push sewing pins in the middle of the pattern to hold it. Trace the outline of the foot on the leather, making certain to also note the insert line on one side of the moccasin. Flip the pattern over and repeat the procedure to create the opposite foot. Cut out leather around pattern, making sure to also cut the foot insert.

    • 2). Fold the leather over itself to view the outline of the moccasins, so that the seam is on the outside of the moccasin. Thread a glover's needle with 6 yards of waxed nylon thread. Make a knot at one end of the thread, leaving a 1-inch tail.

    • 3). Start at the toe, and whip stitch around the moccasins to close the seam. Use craft pliers to help pull the thread through the leather. Whip stitch along the insert line to add decoration and prevent the leather from fraying.

    • 4). Hold the moccasin by the foot insert to determine the location of the heel. Place the needle at the central top of the heel, and whip stitch down toward the bottom to make a vertical line. Leave 1 1/2 inches at the bottom of the heel. Fold the bottom 1 1/2-inches horizontally, and whip stitch in both directions to secure the piece.

    • 5). Measure around the top of the moccasin to determine the proper length of fur. Cut a 1 1/4-inch-wide piece of fur in this length. Pin the fur to the right side of the opening and wrap it around the length of the moccasin. Trim excess fur, leaving an inch of slack. Thread the glover's needle and use an overcast stitch to sew from the heel seam, all the way around the back of the foot back. Tack the fur on the inside of the moccasin to hide the stitches.
