Can Freddy Be Saved? Another "Elm Street" Remake in the Works

Remember the 2010 remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street? New Line Cinema is hoping you don't. "The House That Freddy Built," as the studio is often called, is reportedly planning on re-rebooting the horror franchise about an undead serial killer with a claw glove who invades victims' dreams. The 2010 reboot, which starred Jackie Earle Haley as murderer Freddy Krueger, performed solidly at the box office, earning $63 million -- on par with contemporary horror remakes like Friday the 13th, Halloween, The Amityville Horror, The Wolfman and Dawn of the Dead -- but it received a cold reception from fans, who tended to find it overly safe, overly serious and frankly, just plain dull.

Haley's Freddy lacked the charisma of Robert Englund, who'd become synonymous with the role since originating it in 1984, and the film has served as fuel to the fire for people railing against unnecessary remakes.

According to The Tracking Board, New Line has learned its lesson (or not, depending on how you look at it) and is planning on creating "a fresh new take" on the iconic slasher movie. David Leslie Johnson, whose genre credits include Orphan and Red Riding Hood plus episodes of The Walking Dead and the upcoming Conjuring sequel, has been tapped to write the script, but no director has been signed yet. Let's hope it's someone who can indeed bring something fresh to the franchise and not simply rehash (re-slash?) the original. Perhaps the biggest question, however, is whether fans will ever accept someone other than Englund as Freddy?
