    What Is Oxygen Bleach?

    • Oxygen bleach is used for household cleaning and to remove stains. Hydrogen peroxide, sodium percarbonate and sodium perborate are three types of oxygen bleaches on the market today. The first is liquid, while the others come in powder form and can be found in dishwashing and laundry detergents.

    How Does It Work?

    • When the materials are mixed with water, oxygen is released, which results in the cleaning action. The reaction breaks up the soil and/or decolorizes the stain.

    Advantages

    • There are several advantages to using oxygen bleach instead of chlorine bleach. Oxygen bleach is color-safe, nontoxic and can be used on a variety of materials ranging from carpets to fabric. It also has a longer shelf life, is safe for the environment and acts like a disinfectant. The powders are also safe to use in combination with other household products, unlike chlorine bleach.

    Disadvantages

    • However, oxygen bleaches can be on the expensive side and can take longer to work. This can be a major disadvantage for busy individuals. In addition, they shouldn't be used on delicate clothing like silk.

    Products Containing Oxygen Bleach

    • Some examples of oxygen bleach products are Stain Solver, Clorox Oxi Magic, All Oxi Active, Shout Oxy Power, Bissell Deep Cleaning Booster and Oxy-Boost. Bottles of hydrogen peroxide found in pharmacy sections are another ready-to-use form of oxygen bleach.
