    • 1). Wear a pair of safety goggles without vent holes, rubber gloves and an N-95 respirator when removing mold.

    • 2). Remove all visible surface mold from the basement. Mix one part bleach with four parts warm water. Saturate a scrub brush in the mixture and scrub all mold that you see. Allow the area to dry.

    • 3). Dry the basement. Mold and its spores thrive in damp, moist areas. Removing the moisture will help reduce the amount of mold spores in your basement. Open any doors and windows in the basement. Place fans in the basement to help dry it out and provide better air circulation.

    • 4). Set several UV lamps in your basement and allow them to run for 24 hours. The light from the UV lamps will flood your basement and kill both the mold and its spores. Use the UV lamps only when you will be home. Leaving them on unattended could pose a safety hazard.

    • 5). Use a dehumidifier to remove the moisture from your basement's air. Mold spores cannot live without moisture. Running a dehumidifier will greatly reduce the amount of spores in your basement's air.

    • 6). Run a high-efficiency air filter in your basement. The high-efficiency air filter will not eliminate all mold spores but it will help reduce the number of mold spores.
