Water Damage and Carpet Mold
- Moisture causes mold and mildew to develop inside a home. High humidity levels indoors can come from showers and clothes dryers. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that optimal humidity levels inside a home should range between 30 and 50 percent. Water leaks also cause humidity levels to rise, promoting mold growth.
- One symptom of mold growth inside a home is a musty or moldy scent. Mold is often visible on carpet or walls. Mold from water damage is usually localized on one area of the wall or carpet. If entire walls or rooms are damaged by mold, then high humidity is the most common cause.
- Locate and fix the leak that is causing the water damage in your home. Once the leak is fixed, remove and discard the moldy carpet and the padding underneath. Since carpet and padding are porous surfaces, it is impossible to completely eliminate mold in them, making replacement necessary.
