How to Train a Poodle Puppy to Sit
- 1). Speak your puppy's name in a normal (not loud) voice to get his attention and have him walk over to where you are.
- 2). Hold the treat in front of the puppy's nose, then move it backward (but not up) toward his ear. If you hold it too high, the puppy will jump instead of sit down. The puppy will be in position to sit down to take the treat into his mouth.
- 3). Say the word "sit" when the puppy sits down. Use a calm but firm voice. Decide whether you will use the puppy's name with the command - i.e., "Rover, sit" or "Sit, Rover" or just "sit." Remember the command and use it exactly the same way each time you practice with your puppy.
- 4). Give the puppy a treat when it sits and praise him, using his name, petting him, etc. If he lays down or flops over, just repeat the process, do not scold him. Repeat these steps over time with praise, petting and treats.
