How to Make a Layout for a Flyer

    • 1). Design the flier layout in a program with which you feel most comfortable. If you're a beginner, use a word processor. If you have some familiarity with graphic design software, use a professional layout program.

    • 2). Divide the flier into four main sections. The top half contains two sections and the bottom half contains two sections for a total of four.

    • 3). Enter a headline across the top. Write "Headline Goes Here Headline Goes Here" as placeholder text since this is only a layout. You can type over the text later when creating an actual flier. Use a bold font that is sized to fill that quarter section of the page (about 24 to 36 points) and ensure that the headline takes up no more than two lines in the layout. Use a headline that calls the reader to action (for instance, Come Party with Us Tonight).

    • 4). Insert an empty box under the headline (second section of the flier). Size it to between one-quarter to two-thirds of the page. Here you can insert a central image in your flier.

    • 5). Set aside a place under or besides the photo (third section) where you can write a short synopsis of the reason for your flier. Here you'll include the "who, what and why" of the event you're advertising. Insert dummy text in a font large enough to read if someone is standing right in front of the page or holding it in hand (about 12 to 14 points).

    • 6). Provide a space at the end of your flier (the fourth section) where you can run down the other two "Ws" of your event (where and when). Put each detail of the where and when on its own separate line. For instance, "Date: Enter Date Here" on one line then "Time: Enter Time Here" on the next line. Write the placeholder text in a slightly larger font than the synopsis.
