Chinese Meditation Helps Cut Tobacco Use by 60%

A new study reveals that smokers can quit smoking by using a type of meditation developed in China,

The Texas Tech University in cooperation with the University of Oregon made a research, which examined the effects of the mindfulness meditation known as Integrative Body-Mind Training (IBMT) on the pathways in the brain related to self-control and addiction. It was discovered that meditation practices help smokers reduced their habit by 60%.

The control group that got a relaxation regimen instead showed no reduction in their smoking. Yi-Yuan Tang, author and director of Texas Tech's Neuroimaging Institute, said that they found that participants who made IBMT exercises also experienced a great reduction in their longing for cigarettes,

IBMT has long been practiced in China and involves mental imagery, whole-body relaxation and mindfulness training led by a qualified coach. IBMT differs from other kinds of meditation because it depends on the inducement of a high degree of understanding and balance of the mind, body and environment. The meditation state is accelerated through exercises and trainer-group dynamics, resonance and harmony.
Tang has studied the meditation practice for its potential effects on a variety of stresses and changes in the brain, including structure and function. The findings are published in the Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
