Human Freedom: But Why Are So Many People So Afraid?

103 41
Fear is one thing
But antagonism, hostility and outright hatred
would appear to be something different altogether
But why do so many people seem to be so afraid
of human freedom?

Certainly the answer is not always a simple one
But perhaps people have been conditioned
to believe that they are always right
And if this would happen to be true
conformity to one's ideals would seem to be
the only logical choice

But truth is not always a simple thing
And the interpretation of human values
is not always an objective matter
And as much as this may provoke disdain,
in a conservative mind it may be better
to promote tolerance as there will always be
a special place for human dignity

In our complex multi-cultural world
I am afraid that the prospect for consensus
on all social matters would be an unlikely thing
So why not take a liberal point of view?
In a just society there need not necessarily be
a complex set of laws

Violating the rights of others cannot be allowed
Because living a life in accordance with one's
personal values is an important thing
But let us not take this matter lightly
Of course a highly evolved society is something
that we want to have
And individual liberty is a supreme value
that every thinking person should espouse

So let us engage our minds and have a proper debate
An unprejudiced, unencumbered person
is something that good people can work to cultivate
And in our global world
we should begin to consider the interests
of a worldwide citizenry
Parochial interests may sometimes be a threat
to the common good

And as much as it may sometimes be difficult to promote
respect for the common rights of all people
is something for which we should always strive for
Of course there is a special place for human kindness
And efforts to enhance harmonious interaction
is likely to facilitate a just reward

Such idealism is the ultimate goal
And while it is only realistic that some humans
will fall short of the ideals that are expressed herein,
let us not be sidetracked by petty cynicism
Human potential is glorious and immense
Failure to recognize the innate capabilities
of the common individual is a tragic mistake
Efforts to improve the state of human interaction
is a work in progress
Patience and commitment will lift our standards,
increase the development of common interests
and augment the level of happiness
among the human people at large
