Bathing during confinement period is a prohibited rule.
Having to endure extreme heat and discomfort during the hottest months of the year for confinement period was indeed no easy task.
In order to partial breastfeed her newborn, hygiene is utmost important.
Therefore my wife managed to get around the tradition by using "Da Fong Ai" (a herbal fusion in convenient sachets).
The confinement nanny would boil the sachets prior to adding more hot water into a pail, thereafter she would add some water to lower the temperature ideal for bathing.
Having able to bathe after enduring for the first week, was indeed ecstasy for my wife.
No wonder she spent a good half an hour whenever she bathes.
Subsequently would she repeat the wonderful regime every alternate days.
A word of caution is that the temperature of the water should not be too cold to prevent wind from entering the body.
Throughout the 28 days, my wife would try to rest as much as possible in the bedroom.
During the day, she would cuddle the baby in the bed and catch some afternoon nap while the confinement nanny was doing housework or cooking the meals.
During the night, she would occasionally take a peek into another room where the baby is under the care of the confinement nanny.
During these confinement period, rest is the most important to recuperate the body so that when the confinement period is over, the body is recharged to take over the full duties from the confinement nanny.
Therefore all strenuous duties and activities should be avoided.
During the confinement period, the confinement nanny would advise my wife to stay indoor to prevent any chance of catching a cold or possible "wind".
Therefore throughout the confinement, my wife would heed the advise and stay indoor with her feet protect from direct contact with the ground by wearing slippers.
As modern generation, we are still obliged to follow the tradition of confinement.
Though there are a minority of women who do not regard the confinement tradition seriously, but having that 28 days of discomfort is a small price to pay as compared to risk having ill health later on in life.
