How to File a Tax Return on Lottery Winnings
- 1). Gather the W-2G forms that you've received with your lottery winnings. If you receive annuity payments, a W-2G Form will be provided with each check.
- 2). Open a Web browser and navigate to the IRS forms and instructions website (see Resources). Download and print Form 1040 and the accompanying instructions. Form 1040 must be used when filing taxes claiming lottery winnings; Form 1040EZ and 1040A cannot be used.
- 3). Enter your personal information and income details on Form 1040. Report your lottery winnings by entering the amount shown in box 1 of Form W-2G on line 21 of Form 1040. If you have multiple W-2G Forms, calculate the total payment and enter that amount on line 21 of Form 1040.
- 4). Finalize your Form 1040 and submit the form together with your documentation to the IRS. Be sure to include your W-2G forms with your submission.
