How to Troubleshoot a Computer That is Slow to Shut Down on Vista

    Check for Problems

    • 1). Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Click "Performance Information and Tools."

    • 2). Check for a section marked "Performance issues." Click the message "Programs are causing Windows to shut down slowly. View details," if available.

    • 3). Review the information displayed to find out the name of the application or driver interfering with shut-down. Follow the instructions at the bottom of the window to find out how to resolve the issue.

    Edit the Registry

    • 1). Click "Start." Type "regedit" into the search bar on the bottom of the Start menu. Hit "Enter."

    • 2). Choose "regedit" from the results listed. Navigate through "HKEY_CURRENT_USER," and "Control Panel."

    • 3). Click "Desktop." Double-click "AutoEndTasks." Enter "1" into the "Value Data" field. Click "OK." Reboot your system.
