How to Splint a Fractured Hip in the Wilderness
- 1). Assess for fracture (see "How to Assess for Fracture").
- 2). Immobilize the injury: Any movement is not only very painful but also can worsen the injury.
- 3). Make sure both legs are straight.
- 4). Gather materials to tie the legs together. Any of the following will do: pack straps, rope, clothing, belts, bandannas, triangular bandages.
- 5). Tie the legs together in several places.
- 6). Place padding between the tying material and the legs.
- 7). Check circulation, sensation and motion in the legs, to make sure the tying material isn't too tight.
- 8). Continue with further treatment for the fracture (see related eHows on treating fractures).
