  • 1). Assess for fracture (see "How to Assess for Fracture").

  • 2). Immobilize the injury: Any movement is not only very painful but also can worsen the injury.

  • 3). Make sure both legs are straight.

  • 4). Gather materials to tie the legs together. Any of the following will do: pack straps, rope, clothing, belts, bandannas, triangular bandages.

  • 5). Tie the legs together in several places.

  • 6). Place padding between the tying material and the legs.

  • 7). Check circulation, sensation and motion in the legs, to make sure the tying material isn't too tight.
