Specifications for the Toyota 22RE

The predecessor to the 22RE Toyota engine was the very popular 20R engine. It had a carburetor fuel-delivery system with a displacement of 0.0773 cubic feet. In 1985, Toyota introduced the 22RE, which had a larger displacement and was fuel-injected. The original 22RE was produced until 1988. A modified version was produced in 1989 and was the workhorse engine for Toyota four-cylinder engines until it was discontinued in 1995. - The original 22RE engine has electronic fuel injection. The engine displacement is 0.0773 cubic feet. Its bore is 3.464 inches and its stroke is 3.503 inches. It has a compression ratio of 9.3-to-1. This is an in-line, four-cylinder engine that achieves maximum torque of 137 foot-pounds at 2,800 rpm and 105 maximum horsepower at 4,800 rpm.
- The 22RE received minor performance modifications in 1989. The updated engine produces 112 horsepower at 4,600 rpm. Torque increased to 142 foot-pounds at 3,400 rpm. All other specifications remained the same.
- Both versions of the Toyota 22RE come with the RF1A transmission, which is gear-driven with a top shifter and a gear reduction of 2.28. The standard five-speed transmission has a low-gear rating of 3.93-to-1. The shift length is 25.25 inches.
