5 Cape Town Landmarks That Make Awesome Locations

Stills and film productions come to Cape Town for all sorts of reasons, for the light, for the weather, for the excellent and efficient production services and infrastructure and not least the beautiful surroundings.
Whether you are looking for urban streetscapes, dramatic panoramas, period architecture or glamorous beaches, Cape Town has it all.
In many movies Cape Town and its environs have doubled for other countries, but more and more producers are choosing Cape Town for its own sake, seeking out the landmarks that are quintessentially Cape Town.
Here are just a few of the many landmarks that make awesome locations.
Table Mountain The Mother City's guardian mountain has to be its most recognisable landmark of all.
It can be used in the background with its distinctive silhouette visible for many miles on the beaches to the north of the city centre, for any shot that wants placing unmistakably in South Africa.
Or head to the top of the mountain via the cable car, where rocks and boulders and pristine fynbos make for stunning location settings with dramatic drops, the mountain peaks of the peninsula fading to blues in the distance and sunset views over the ocean or over the city and harbour.
Rhodes Memorial Set in a prominent position on the slopes of Table Mountain among shady pine trees and with views over the city to the Hottentot mountains, the Rhodes Memorial offers imposing architecture on monumental scale: flights of stone steps, Doric columns and porticos, lions to rival those in London's Trafalgar Square.
A backdrop of the rocky slopes of Devil's Peak behind adds drama.
Cape Town City Hall Built in 1905, the city hall is one of the last grand Victorian architectural flights of fancy built in Cape Town.
Inspired by the Italian Renaissance, its facade combines classical architectural elements with the local sandstone and is topped by a half size replica of London's Big Ben.
The Grand Parade that stretches in front of it is a natural gathering place for great events, holding the more than 250,000 South Africans who gathered here to welcome Nelson Mandela on his release from prison in 1990.
Unfinished Flyover The unfinished highway flyover on Cape Town's Foreshore seems an unlikely location to be in demand for film or stills productions, but it has proved popular, especially in action movies and television commercials.
The vast concrete flyover curves up over the foreshore intersection, only to end dramatically in mid-air.
From the top there are fantastic views over the city centre and Table Mountain.
But those wanting to film here need to get in soon, as there are rumours that it will soon be either demolished or re-developed.
Victoria and Albert Waterfront The majestic backdrop of Table Mountain makes itself felt at the waterfront, where the historic harbours have been redeveloped into a bustling centre with shops, restaurants, museums and cinemas.
Any production that wants to use boats, whether yachts or cruise ships, can find the perfect setting here, where the reflections of the mountain in the harbour waters are even more stunning at sunset.
Cape Town offers many more landmarks, both architectural and natural.
Ask the advice of an experienced local production company to find exactly the right location for your stills or film production.
