Tsunami that had recently hit Asia had claimed the lives of many as well as destroyed homes and towns.
The northern hemisphere had experience extreme coldness very much more than what their fore father had experience many years ago.
Children can no longer stay outside and play with the snow in fear of catching pneumonia.
Many governments had spent millions on funding for inventions that are deemed necessary to protect the lives of the people.
Devices such as those that can sense in advance conditions such as tornado, tsunami or volcanic eruptions are invented and are used in places that are most likely to experience such disasters.
These are examples of devices that are crucial in live saving.
There are also devices that are not so crucial but help in proving comfort and protection to us.
These devices are also cleverly invented that they too deserve some sort of recognition.
A good example is the patio heater.
There was a time that garden parties or feast are restricted to summer and spring; these are of course before patio heater days.
Of course for the finer parts of the world such as the Mediterranean and other places not far from the equator, you can have parties in the outdoor any odd days it doesn't rain.
For the rest of us, winter and autumn are a sure excuse for staying indoors.
When the cold wind starts blowing, you'll just have to pack up the barbecue set and put it away in the garage for the next 6 months.
Perhaps it is by depriving mankind from being out and about with nature is a strong enough urge to create this wonderful device we call patio heater.
They were at first very big and not very much to look at but as the years pass by, man had made it into something more attractive looking thus making it more and more popular.
Today, the patio heater is found to be in shapes of mushroom or umbrella.
This is why it is more known as the mushroom or umbrella heater.
The patio heater is not only common in homes; it is widely used in restaurants and pubs too.
This has definitely helped restaurants and bar owners to captures more customers because it has helped enhance their outdoor facilities.
With patio heater, dining out in a winter's night is no longer impossible.
First, one does not need to wear bulky jacket and gloves.
Second, you'd be amazed at how a cold night can been transformed into a warm and comforting one.
The patio heater can operate in many ways.
One is that is running on electricity.
The heater has a stainless steel pole that is connected to electric source via a hose.
Of course, turning it on is as simple as flicking a switch but there are safety measure that you have to take, since running on electricity, the heater needs to be plugged to an electric source.
Therefore, coiling cables are needed to get it connected.
With this comes the possibility of people tripping up the cable and may result in people injuring themselves.
The much more portable heaters are the ones that uses liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and propane.
The popularity has increase especially in restaurants and bars.
This heater works in a way that gas is directed to a perforated metal screen.
At the top of the post, a burner will be triggered by as little as a single spark.
Heat is radiated in a circular motion all for the reason to maximize it.
The heater also has a reflector at the top of the burner which is used to reflect heat otherwise it will be lost.
However popular the LPG and propane heater are, there is also a negative aspect in using it.
It will in a long run create environmental problems in the future.
