    Leaves

    • The leaves of the linden tree are usually found in two rows, with each leaf being anywhere from 2 to 4 inches long. They are recognized by their long, pointed tip and rounded heart shape. The leaf itself is sharp and saw-toothed in appearance, dark green on top and pale underneath. The American version of the leaf is a bit smaller in size, but has the same characteristics.

    Bark

    • The bark of the European linden tree is usually smooth and gray, with furrows that develop as the tree ages. The twigs are brown and hairless. The bark of the linden tree is actually quite useful as a homeopathic remedy to treat such maladies as kidney stones, gout stones and coronary disease, according to All Bulgaria Virtual Guide.

    Fruit

    • The European linden tree bears fruit in the late spring and early summer each year, and this fruit can get up to one-quarter inch in diameter. It blossoms out of a stem that appears out of the top part of the leaf. When it blossoms, it can produce a fragrant nectar smell. The blossom is an herb that can lower blood pressure, induce relaxation and help those that suffer from mild forms of high blood pressure.

    Appearance

    • The European linden tree can grow up to 70 feet in height, and as it grows, it takes on an increasing pyramid-crown type of shape. The tree's branches grow out full from the base, and as you get closer to the top of the tree, the branches become shorter, creating a sort of umbrella-type dimension.

    Insects and Honey

    • Because of the fragrance the tree's blossoms produce in the spring and summer, the European linden tree is a popular haunt for insects like bees and butterflies. In fact, the tree produces honey that is quite valued for its use in areas such as liqueur and medicine. Honey and linden tea can also counteract colds.
