How to Plumb a Sink Drain
- 1). Turn off the water to the sink by shutting off the water supply valve to the kitchen.
- 2). Turn on the faucet to remove any water from the pipes. Place a bucket under the drain pipe.
- 3). Hold the old pipes with a wrench and turn the slip nut of the old strainer. Pull off the pipe and drain the water into the bucket.
- 4). Insert the end of a pair of pliers into the strainer and turn the pliers using a screwdriver to remove the strainer.
- 5). Spread a bead of plumber's putty with a putty knife around the strainer hole and press the new strainer down onto it. Wipe away any excess putty.
- 6). Place the rubber and cardboard washer onto the bottom of the strainer and screw the locknut onto the bottom of the strainer.
- 7). Screw the new tailpipe that came with the strainer onto the locknut. Place the tailpiece washer between the new tailpiece and the locknut. Screw it down by hand but do not tighten it all the way.
- 8). Screw a 1 1/2-inch adapter onto the drainage pipe coming out of the wall at the back of your sink. Fit the extender and the trap arm together and mark the extender with a permanent marker where it needs to be cut so the new waste tee will fit into the tailpiece. Cut the extender using a PVC cutter and insert it into the 1 1/2-inch adapter coming out of the wall.
- 9). Mark the waste tee and cut it so it fits between the trap and the tail piece. Fit the pieces together and tighten the nuts with a wrench.
