Stagger Lee: Mythical criminal hero in African-American folklore, also known as "Stackolee" or "Staggolee," among other variations. Based on the real story of Lee Shelton, a St. Louis pimp and carriage driver that shot a man to death in an argument and was sentenced to prison, the name has become an archetype describing a no-nonsense tough-guy.
A familiar character in blues songs, Mississippi John Hurt's "Stack O' Lee Blues" is considered the definitive version, which has also been recorded by Ma Rainey, Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, and even the Fabulous Thunderbirds.
Stagger Lee has also appeared in reggae songs, movies, and even a graphic novel.
