Nick Hornby Background and Writing:

Nick Hornby, son of businessman Sir Derek Hornby, was raised in Maidenhead, England. He graduated from Cambridge University and taught English as a second language and began his writing career as a freelance reviewer for Time Out and The Literary Review.

As a teenager, Hornby developed a tremendous interest in football and was an avid Arsenal fan.

His first book, Fever Pitch, was published in 1992 and is a memoir of his obsession with the club and the sport. Fever Pitch won the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award and earned him instant literary acclaim in the UK.

Three years after Fever Pitch, Hornby published High Fidelity, which was also an immediate hit. About a Boy followed in 1998 and How to be Good in 2002. All of these novels were huge hits both on the shelf and later in the theater, where film adaptations of Hornby's work has met with incredible success. The film rights for Hornby's 2005 novel, A Long Way Down, was purchased by Johnny Depp before the novel was even finished, and it seems likely the movie is not far off.

Throughout the years, Hornby has kept his hand in nonfiction writing with a book column in The Believer magazine and pop culture essay collections including Songbook, a collection of essays about popular songs, and Housekeeping vs. The Dirt, a collection of his Believer essays. His latest novel, Juliet, Naked, published in September 2009, is reminiscent of High Fidelity as it is a love story set against a pop music backdrop.
