How to Get a Criminal Record From the FBI for Free
- 1). Visit the official website of the FBI. Type in identification record request/criminal background check into the search-site text box at the top of the home page. Click the search tab. Open the identification record request/criminal background check page. Download the application information form if you are searching for personal records.
- 2). Fill out the application information form in full. Include required data, such as your full name, date of birth and social security number. Write in your fee waiver request in the reason for Request text box. Sign the application.
- 3). Draft a cover letter of to the application. Reference the Freedom of Information Act and request that, in conjunction with this act, the $18 fee be waived due to your non-commercial interest in accessing a criminal record. Place the cover letter, application and original fingerprint card into an envelope and mail to: FBI CJIS Division -- Record Request, 1000 Custer Hollow Road, Clarksburg, WV 26306.
- 4). Call the FBI CJIS Division and inform the representative of your interest in obtaining a criminal record. Inform the representative if you possess press credentials or desire the records for educational or scientific purposes. Mention that in accordance with the Freedom of Information Act any of these criteria allow you the opportunity to request a record search fee waiver.
