How to Identify a Leopard Moth Caterpillar
- 1). Estimate the size of the caterpillar. Leopard moth caterpillars range in length from 2 to 3 inches.
- 2). Look at the bristles covering the caterpillar. Leopard moth caterpillars are often called "woolly bears" because the black bristles stick out from the body, making them resemble a small sea anemone.
- 3). Turn the caterpillar over very gently with a small twig. Make sure not to harm the caterpillar. The spaces between the body segments of the leopard moth caterpillar display bright red-orange markings.
- 4). Return the leopard moth to its natural habitat if it has been removed.
