    • 1). Sand the sassafras wood with 220-grit sandpaper until it feels smooth. Sand along the sassafras wood grain, or splintering will occur.

    • 2). Wipe sawdust from the sassafras, using tack cloths.

    • 3). Cover portions of the sassafras you do not want to finish with painter's tape. Place drop cloths on the floor.

    • 4). Coat the sanded sassafras with a gel wood stain, using a 2- to 3-inch natural-bristled paintbrush. Brush along with the sassafras wood grain. Apply a thin coating to prevent runs. Wait five minutes, and then wipe the gel stain from the sassafras with rags. Wait four hours for the sassafras to dry. Skip this step if you do not want a stained finish.

    • 5). Use mineral spirits to wash gel stain from your brush.

    • 6). Coat the sassafras with varnish, using the cleaned brush. Brush along with the sassafras wood grain. Apply a thin coating to prevent sagging. Wait four hours for the sassafras to dry.
