    Gwynedd-Mercy College

    • Gwynedd-Mercy College offers a Master of Science in Special Education. Students must already possess a teaching certificate prior to entering the program. The degree emphasizes rigorous research and writing skills that integrate educational theory and research knowledge. In addition, field experience in the classroom is an integral part of the program. While working in the classroom, special emphasis is placed on student assessment and diagnosis, instructional methods, behavior management and classroom management.

    Holy Family University

    • Holy Family University has graduate programs that are approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Two programs are available for a Master's of Education in Special Education. Both programs require initial teacher certification and approximately three years of teaching experience prior to entering the program. The Master of Education with certification in Special Education (Cognitive, Behavioral, Physical/Health Disabilities) is designed for teachers who are already certified to teach, but not specifically certified for special eduation. The Master of Education in Special Education with Advanced Practice is for teachers who already have certification in Special Education and are looking to complete a graduate degree and attend more advanced courses in special education.

    Drexel University

    • Located in West Philadelphia, Drexel University offers a Master's of Science in Special Education. The course work can be completed online. It is a part-time program designed for working professionals. Students must complete 49.5 online credits, most of which are for Core Special Education Certification courses. The remaining six credits are in the student's chosen area of concentration and research. Concentrations include autism, technologies for special education and language and cultural issues.

    LaSalle University

    • LaSalle University offers a master's degree in education with certification in special education which can be completed in one year of full-time class work. Twenty-one credits are required for the master's degree, and 30 credits are necessary for special education certification. All courses are available on campus and practicums take place in the Hatboro-Horsham School District located in Horsham, Pennsylvania, and FitzSimons High School in Philadelphia.
