Costume Ideas for 80s Rock Stars
- Channel your inner Madonna or Cyndi Lauper by piling on brightly-colored layers, numerous bracelets and necklaces and plenty of makeup. Madonna's look from the 1980s won't be complete without lacy gloves with the fingertips cut off, a bustier and upwards of 20 rubber bracelets on each arm. Wear a blond wig with the roots showing. A ribbon wrapped around your head and tied in a bow on top completes the look. For a Cyndi Lauper style costume, crimp your hair or add some bright, but temporary hair dye. Go for bright shades on the eyes and more beaded necklaces than you think possible.
- If Joan Jett is more your style, try on an 1980s rocker girl look. A black wig cut longer in the back and short in the front is a must, or you can temporarily dye your hair. For clothing, think black. A black leather jacket is a must-have for the costume, as are tight black pants. Wear a wide belt on your hips. The belt can be plain black but one with metal studs will work better. For makeup, pile on the black eyeliner, and use dark gray shadow on the lids.
- Male rock stars in the 1980s tended to look a little ridiculous, making them a fun choice for costumes. To look like you belong in a 1980s hair band, tease long hair up and spray with hair spray. If you don't have long hair, invest in an inexpensive wig. Finish the costume with tight pants, preferably in an animal or other outrageous print, and a white tank top. Pull a long, fringed vest over the shirt. If you want to wear makeup, go for a more extreme look, such as blue eyeshadow and lots of blush on the cheeks.
- Go for the post-punk look by dressing like Robert Smith of the Cure or the men from Devo. To get Smith's look, wear all black and apply makeup to your face. Thick black eyeliner and pale skin are key to the look. Smith is also known for his dark, tousled hair. If your hair is the right length, run some gel through it and tousle with your fingers to get the right look. If you want to dress like Devo, wear close fitting black clothing or a yellow jumpsuit. Complete the look with a hat made of stacked foam circles, painted red.
