Presentation & Interpretation of Data
- A pie chart looks like a circle divided into triangles. Each triangle represents a specific type of information. These charts show parts of a whole, so if each percentage is added together, it must equal 100 percent. A business can use a pie chart to show what percentage of their resources is going into each project in development
- Line graphs are used to express trends dependent on variables. The vertical part of the graph expresses one value while the horizontal dimension expresses another. If someone wanted to track their expenses over a year, they would plot it on a line graph with the bottom showing months in the year and the side showing amounts of money spent. They could then connect these plot points with a line to see a trend in their spending over time.
- A bar graph is similar to a line graph in that there are two types of variables. A difference between these graphs is that a bar graph is used to compare two types of data depending on the variables. For instance, to track the weather currently compared to the weather 10 years ago by month. The horizontal dimension would show January for the current year with one bar and another adjacent bar for 10 years ago followed by the rest of the months, while the vertical data would show temperatures. A bar would then be drawn up over each month showing the average temperature for that month in that year.
