How to Extract Stock Data
- 1). Go to a finance Web site. There are many sites that offer historical stock data for free. Google Finance, Yahoo! Finance, and BigCharts are popular sites for stock market data.
- 2). Set your parameters. You will need to enter the stock ticker symbol of the company, which you can search for on the stock data Web site, and the date range you are examining.
- 3). Extract the stock data. Each Web site will have an Export button. Most sites allow you to export in multiple formats. Common formats are Microsoft Excel, or .xls, format and comma-separated value, or .csv, format.
- 4). Open your data in a spreadsheet program. You will need a spreadsheet program such as Microsoft Excel to manipulate and perform calculations using your data. If you do not have Excel, you can import the file for free into Google Spreadsheets or download the OpenOffice.org spreadsheet program, which is also free.
