First of all, when you are considering how to start a home business, you need to know yourself.
What do you like to do, what do you hate doing and why do you want to start a home business? I always encourage people to go TOWARD the things they love doing rather than simply chase a niche they think is profitable.
Take me for example, I love helping others achieve their goals and love working with people so I chose a home business that allows me to do so versus just sell widgets.
I am also NOT the inventive type so I was not graced with those gifts so I didn't try to think of some big invention that would make me a lot of money.
Here is a big question to consider when you are thinking about how to start a home business, CAN YOU WORK FROM HOME? This may seem silly to some, until you try it.
I know guys that plan a home business and then they realize that they are just as lazy as can be around the house, working from home MAY NOT BE FOR YOU! What is the product you plan to promote from home? Is it unique, it is needed in the market? Is there an existing want or desire for it? Again, I am not the inventive type so I don't try to invent needs, I try to simply intercept the existing needs out there.

Timing is everything.
People tell me that real estate is all about location, location, location.
No it's not.
I have friends who have multi-million dollar houses on the water that have awesome locations but they cannot do anything with them.
Their timing is off.
Whatever product or service you plan on selling from home, know that the timing is THE most important.
I highly recommend talking to people that have SUCCESSFUL home businesses.
Most people seem to take advice from the person that is least successful in their lives, don't do that.
