    Wild Foods

    • In the wild, opossums eat fruits, leaf matter, insects, worms, birds, amphibians, reptiles, small mammals, and dead animals. They typically hunt at night. They roam open and wooded areas, climb trees, and swim in search of food.

    Foods from Human Areas

    • Opossums are considered pests in human areas because they will raid garbage dumps, compost piles, pet and bird feeders, and gardens, devouring fruits and vegetables. They will often make their homes around or under buildings.

    Habitat Influence

    • What opossums eat is dependent on its habitat and the season. Although they normally forage close to home, they can sometimes travel up to two miles to hunt. They use their tails to grip while climbing and their rear feet to hold food items.
