While this is of great importance, you need to keep this on the back burner for the moment, because if you bring this subject up right away, it may turn away potential people.
However, do ensure that you have a potential budget in mind, and that you don't go over this amount.
A good indicator of a professional tradesman is their membership of any professional or trade bodies.
This will indicate that a certain standard of qualifications has been reached, and is also a good place to start from if you are looking for local firms as many trade bodies have search facilities.
Experience and training are both important factors as well.
They have to have experience installing the kind of roof you have or want, and they have to know all the ordinances and building codes required.
For example, your roof may be comprised of Spanish slate, in which case find a roofer who is familiar with working with this material, and an expert in using the hook fixing method required for this style of roof.
One of the other things you need to ask for when looking for the right person is for their references, and you need to check these.
The only real way to know for certain if a contractor is the right person for the job is by their former customers.
Be wary of a tradesmen who is reluctant to give out references.
Let's say that you have narrowed your search down to a few different professionals.
Now you have to have them come in for an estimate.
Make sure they provide free estimates.
You are going to want to ask many questions.
How long will the job take? Are their quotes exact, or are they just estimating the cost and the time frame? Is the price non negotiable, or can you add or subtract certain things if needed? A big question is going to be what kind of guarantee, and warranty do they include with their work.
Anyone that doesn't guarantee their work, or provide some kind of warranty should be avoided.
The next important questions are going to be, are they going to take all the debris away, and what kind of payment terms can be worked out.
The next step in this process, after the estimates have been made and you have picked someone is the contract.
Before you make up a contract, you and the roofer should go over all the details again, what materials are going to be used, how much it will cost, what the payment plan is, etc.
Then when the contract is written, make sure that you go over everything with them in detail, checking to make sure everything is the same, and any changes are agreed upon, before you sign and give them any money.
This way, there are no extra charges, changes that haven't been agreed on, or any other problems.
If you follow these important tips, you should succeed in finding a roofer who can install your roof professionally to the required standard, and within budget.
