    Signs

    • There are several signs that allow you to know when it's time to start toilet training your child. Showing signs that it is undesirable to wear a wet diaper is one of the ways of knowing he is ready to start. He may also start showing an interest in the toilet or potty chair, and he may just tell you that he wants to use the toilet or big boy pants. Another key sign is when bowel movements become predictable.

    Preparation

    • Allowing your child in the bathroom with you gets her comfortable. Keeping a potty chair in her normal area will allow her to get accustomed to it. Let her start off sitting on the potty chair in her clothes if it makes her more comfortable. Gradually get her used to stripping down her pants and diaper while sitting on the potty chair.

    Toilet Training

    • Once he is used to the potty chair, it's time to move to the next step. Start getting him used to the toilet. Watch for signs of when he needs to use the toilet and get him to it. Make sure he visits the toilet in regular intervals, learning and understanding his timing.

    Benefits

    • By becoming trained, the child gets pride in knowing she has done well. There are no more messy diapers, and another step in early child development can be marked off the list. This is a time to be proud of your child and let her know she is doing great.

    Warning

    • Don't make the assumption that the first time he uses the toilet he is toilet trained. Be aware he will make accomplishments, but children can slide backward. Proper attitude over accomplishments will go a long way in training him to grow.
