    NSAIDs

    • For mild to moderate pain, the use of non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, can help treat any symptoms of pain and inflammation. NSAIDs can include medications such as aspirin or ibuprofen. NSAIDs aren't meant to be taking as a form of long term treatment. Taking NSAIDs on a daily basis can cause serious side effects such as intestinal bleeding, high blood pressure, liver failure, and kidney issues.

    Corticosteroids

    • Corticosteroids include medications such as prednisone, which is a low dosage corticosteroid. Symptoms are immediately resolved after taking a corticosteroid. According to the Mayo Clinic, if treatment from a corticosteroid doesn't resolve symptoms, you may be suffering from a different condition. It is important when taking coticosteroids, to follow your physician's instructions on dosage. Stopping treatment before finishing your treatment can make you sick.

    Diet

    • According to the Mayo Clinic, some contributing causes of PMR include genetics, environmental factors, and issues with your immune system. Diet can help develop stronger bones, as well as keep high blood pressure away. Eating foods such as fruit and vegetables, whole grains, and protein, though in small portions, can help to establish a stronger immune system as well.

    Exercise

    • After you begin taking corticosteroids, symptoms of pain will be lessened. Doing low impact exercises such as stretching or swimming can help minimize symptoms of pain. According to the Mayo Clinic, stretching helps to keep your joints and muscles pliable. Try to do at least 30 minutes of exercise a day.

    Complications

    • Polymyalgia rheumatica can lead to a complication known as giant cell arteritis. The Mayo Clinic notes that 10 to 20 percent of people with polymyalgia rheumatica develop giant cell arteritis. When you develop giant cell arteritis, the lining within your arteries can become inflamed and swollen. Eventually, giant cell arteritis can lead to serious conditions such as stroke, aortic aneurysm or vision loss.
