The Progression of Total Knee Arthroplasty From 1993-2013
The advent of modern total knee arthroplasty traces its beginnings to the early 1970s, with the development of total condylar prostheses by Insall and Coventry. Now 40 yr past this landmark orthopaedic advancement, it is important to reflect on the interim progression of total knee arthroplasty. This review will focus on the progression of total knee arthroplasty during the latter half of this period, from 1993–2013. Specifically, this review highlights trends in epidemiology, advances in implant design, and emerging techniques and technologies, with emphasis on computer-assisted design and implantation.
Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is recognized as a successful treatment for joint disease with a high degree of patient satisfaction. In the past 20 yr, significant progress has been made in many aspects of total knee arthroplasty. This has spawned research and development in the field in an effort to improve patient safety and outcomes. Improvements in implant design and surgical technique have increased implant survival and patient satisfaction.
