Windows Embedded Tools

    • Windows Embedded is a group of operating systems that allows aspiring designers and programmers to give shape to ideas and make those ideas spring to life. A number of different tools in these operating systems can help make this happen and allow designers to create software, mobile phone applications or other technology that will work with Microsoft systems and devices.

    Image Builder Wizard

    • Image Builder Wizard allows computer designers and programmers to build their own operating system on their computer or on any other device that can run Windows operating systems. Operating systems are built with a lot of code and basic programming language. Once built using this tool, the operating system can be duplicated to other computers or devices, running the same hardware abstraction layer, meaning the computer or device will use the same hardware platform as the operating system and the hardware. Within the Image Builder Wizard tool, the System Preparation Tool (SYSPREP) can be used to solve duplicate computer names and erase duplicate security identifiers, both problems caused by this method of deployment. This SYSPREP tool can also be found on the Windows installation CD.

    Image Configuration Editor

    • Image Configuration Editor is a tool within Windows Embedded that helps developers and programmers configure the components to be installed on the run time image. The run time image is what users see when they use the computer or device's operating system, which they have built with the Image Builder Wizard. According to the Windows Embedded Standard blog, these configurations are stored in XML file formats; they are called answer files. Before an answer file can be created, however, information must be gathered from the hardware configuration of the computer itself by running a TAP.EXE, which will generate a PMQ file. Once it has been created, the PMQ file can help designers and programmers to build a run time image.

    Windows Embedded Developer Update

    • Windows Embedded Developer Update is a tool for Windows Embedded that keeps all the other tools and operating systems up-to-date so designers and programmers can design with the most up-to-date versions of all software. This tool will update users whenever new updates are available for any of these design programs, though they will have the freedom to select and choose which updates they want to install to Windows Embedded, rather then everything just updating for them automatically. The tool will also provide a history of the updates you have installed and which updates were released.
