Bollywood and Hindi movie industry are the same, where numerous Hindi movies are made annually. The fame of producing the highest number of movies in India goes to Bollywood. Among the most well known films in Hindi movie industry some are so rich in its content that they competed with many other films from other countries in the category of Best Foreign language Film in Academy Awards.

Such an iconic and popular film is Mother India. The story of this movie is written by Mehboob Khan and is a remake of his 1940 film Aurat. Narrating the social set up in early India, this movie featured Nargis Dutt and Sunil Dutt in the lead roles. The main character in this movie is an innocent woman from the village with many principles and a strong mind. Even then she kills her son, at last, so as to keep her promise to the landlord. The film was chosen as one of the 5 Best Foreign Language films in Oscars for the year 1958. Mother India is a reflection of post independence India and was the 1st film to be selected in the Oscars.

The second movie to get chosen from India for the Oscars was Salaam Bombay!. Produced in 1988, this movie showed the lives of a lot of street children from Bombay (now Mumbai). The film was honored with many national and international awards. Golden Camera Award (Cannes Film Festival), Montreal World Film Festival and the National Film Award for the Best Feature film were some of the awards given for this film, directed by Mira Nair.

Lagaan with Amir Khan in the lead role was the third official entry from India to the Academy Awards. The rule of British Government in India, in the Victorian age was the subject for this film, released in 2001. Lagaan is about a village, which come together to fight against the increase in the tax by the British Government. The movie directed by Ashutosh Gowariker, with an investment of 250 million rupees also featured many British actors Directed by Ashutosh Gowariker within a huge investment (250 million rupees), this movie had some English film actors too.

Water (directed by Deepa Mehta) became India's 4th official entry to the Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Set in the backdrop of 1938 India, the movie looks at the lives of a lot of widows in Varanasi. The movie featuring Vinay Pathak, Liza Ray, Raghubir Yadav and John Abraham, became popular many reasons.

Rang De Basanti, directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, showed the modern India portrayed through the characters of enthusiastic college students. This progressive film brings the revolutionary faces of the passive students, who are disappointed by the corrupt system. Young people in India got influenced by this film, who desperately wanted the system to change. The movie became the official entry from India after facing a tough competition from other films.
