The Glittering National Day celebrations of Oman
National Day of Oman falls on the 18th of November which is one day before the birthday of Sultan Qaboos bin Said. Indeed the country takes on a colourful atmosphere during this event, which is one of the most celebrated items in the Oman calendar and a visitor to Oman would relish the degree of patriotism displayed as well as the bright and bold colourful decorations that are seen throughout the country.
Oman celebrates its release from the clutches of the Portuguese in patriotic spirit every year. The country was subjected to foreign invasion in 1507 where the all the major ports such as the Muscat and Sohar were taken over by the Portuguese. A valiant effort by the Iman Sultan Bin Haif in 1650 as well as the influence of the British merchants over the trade affairs in major ports, effectively expelled the invaders for good. The country has enjoyed sustained freedom since then and is known as the Arab country that has stayed independent the longest.
The National day traditions are generally very colourful and entertaining. Oman looks ablaze with colours and all the famous buildings and structures appear as if immersed in a pool of shimmering light at night. The darkness of the night is pierced into fragments by the blaze of the fire crackers that brilliantly light up the sky right until dawn. The Oman flag can be seen fluttering in the air like a proud and excited child everywhere while statues and cut-outs of Sayyed Qaboos bin Sa'id Al ‘Bu Sa'id are also displayed throughout the country. In addition there are traditional dance items as well as camel races which are included in the day's entertainment segment.
