      The John Deere 401c loader backhoe is a combination frontend loader and backhoe used for earthmoving chores in farm and construction scenarios. The 401c was produced from 1974 to 1983 and is still available in used equipment markets. While smaller than some loader and backhoe units, the 401c has the capacity for most excavating jobs.

    Backhoe Specifications

    • The backhoe bucket of the John Deere 401c can dig to a depth of 15 feet, 3 inches, according to the website Richie Specs. It can dump dirt from that bucket at a maximum height of 11 feet, 8 inches. The maximum horizontal reach of the backhoe bucket, at hitch level, is 18 feet, 7 inches. The bucket has a dig force, the maximum downward pressure the bucket can exert, is 9,650 pounds, while the backhoe bucket can lift 1,950 pounds.

    Loader Specification

    • The John Deere 401c comes standard with an 89 inch wide 1.3 cubic yard capacity bucket. The bucket can generate a breakout force of 7,500 pounds. Breakout force is the initial force to lift an item. The bucket lift capacity, the weight it can lift to dump height, is 5,000 pounds. Dump height, the maximum height of the bucket and the maximum height of a truck or trailer dirt is being dumped into is 8 feet, 5 inches.

    Power Plant

    • The John Deere 401c is powered by a four-cylinder, 62 horsepower diesel engine with a displacement of 219 cubic inches. The engine is naturally aspirated without a turbocharger. The tractor has a 19.5 gallon fuel tank with a 3-gallon cooling system and 2.2 gallons of motor oil capacity. The hydraulic system has a capacity of 8.5 gallons with a flow capacity of 20.6 gallons per minute. The tractor operates as a two-wheel drive unit with power to the large rear wheels. The transmission offers eight speeds in both reverse and forward.
