    • 1). Cut a piece of fishing line 36 inches in length. This will be your leader.

    • 2). Slide a sinker onto the main fishing line. The sinker should be just heavy enough that it will stay on the bottom when you are drifting or trolling.

    • 3). Tie a barrel swivel to the main line with a Palomar knot (see Resources). Tie one end of the leader to the other end of the barrel swivel.

    • 4). Tie a size 6 or 8 hook, or a floating jig head, to the other end of the leader.

    Jigs

    • 1). Select a lead-head jig that is heavy enough to stay on or near the bottom. If you are drifting or trolling, 1/16 oz. should be enough weight. If you are casting, choose a 1/8-oz. jig head.

    • 2). Tie the jig head to the fishing line with a Palomar knot (see Resources).

    • 3). Slide a plastic grub onto the jig. Insert the hook point into the head of the grub and thread the grub up the shank of the hook until its head is near the jig head. Push the hook point out of the grub, and push the grub head so it is tight against the jig head. Aternatively, attach a minnow to the jig. Push the hook point into the minnow's mouth, and bring it out through the top of its head.
