How to Turn My Metal Building Into a Bedroom

    • 1). Block the view of the metal ceiling with an outdoor canopy tent. The type that will work best in this capacity is one of the patio canopies that have a ceiling but no walls. They're lightweight and come in assorted colors. Buy one large enough to fit the inside of the building and with support poles tall enough to accommodate free-standing decorative screens.

    • 2). Buy enough folding screens to cover each of the four walls. Tall, free-standing screens assist you with a number of the decorating challenges that metal walls bring with them. The screens cover the ugly walls, give a place behind which to hide some recessed lights and don't require you to try to hang anything on the metal walls, a task that would prove difficult if you can't drive nails or screws through the walls. The screens should stand just inside or outside the overhang of the canopy.

    • 3). Lay a large area rug on the floor. You may need a pad, because the floors may be made of concrete and will be both hard and cold.

    • 4). Bring in adequate lighting. Your goal in lighting this room is to bring in enough light from different sources to make up for the lack of natural light. Place floor lights behind the screens --- you may have to set the lights before you put up the screens for easier maneuverability. Hang fairy lights on the ceiling poles of the canopy. This will bring a soft light to the whole room. Make sure you have bedside and floor lamps as well.

    • 5). Choose a bed that has a very sturdy frame and headboard; a sleigh bed is a good choice. Your bed will have little reinforcement from leaning against the wall, so you want to choose one that will allow you to sit up in bed and still have adequate support.

    • 6). Find a bookcase that will fit under the canopy. This gives you not only extra storage space, but will provide wall space for artwork. Move the bookcase with the back facing the headboard. On this side, you can hang artwork and in the shelves you can store books, decorative knickknacks and other necessities. One decorative piece that you might consider hanging on the back is a large mirror or a series of smaller mirrors; they will help reflect the light in the room.

    • 7). Consider bringing in space heaters if the building doesn't have adequate heating. Several on the market are ceramic heaters, making them a safer choice for long-term use.
