Donating a Car in Maryland

    • 1). Ensure that you have complete ownership of the vehicle. If you financed your vehicle when you originally purchased it, you would have received a title and the lender would have received a title as well. When you paid off your car in entirety, you would receive the second title from the lender indicating they no longer have a claim to your vehicle. These documents are necessary when signing over the title to the company you donate your car to in the state of Maryland. Under the law for Maryland automobile donations, a car can not be donated without proof of full ownership at the time of donation. If you have lost your title, you may order one at the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration website.

    • 2). Remove your Maryland state license plates from the vehicle. In Maryland it is required that the license plates be removed from your vehicle and turned into the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration before your insurance can be cancelled on the vehicle you are donating.

    • 3). Determine the charity you wish to donate your vehicle to. The Donate For Charity, Inc. lists reputable companies in Maryland that accept car donations. Some of these companies include the Breast Cancer Fund, U.S. Doctors dor Africa and the National Marine Life Center.

If you find another company that is not on this list asking for car donations, you will want to verify the charity as much as possible. You can contact Maryland's Department of Commerce to find out if the charity is registered to the state and if there have been any complaints made about the charity and its car donation program.

    • 4). Locate a copy of your "Maryland Notice of Security Interest Filing" to give to the charity when they pick up your vehicle. This is required for any vehicle donated in the state of Maryland that was purchased using financing. If you do not have a copy of this document, the state of Maryland will accept a letter from the lender on company letterhead indicating the loan has been paid off, along with the loan's origination date, when it was paid off, your name and address, as well as the make, model and color of the vehicle.

    • 5). Contact the charity directly or a company, such as Donate For Charity, Inc. to arrange for the towing of your vehicle. The charity will cover this cost. The charity will then auction the car within the state of Maryland at one of three Maryland state run locations. These locations are Baltimore, Elkridge and Waldorf. After the auction the money will be donated to the charity you have chosen.
