How to Make a Necktie Skirt
- 1). Measure the circumference of your waist. Allow one tie for every two inches, plus two or three extra ties. For example, for a waist measurement of 30 inches, you will need at least 15 + 2 = 17 ties.
- 2). Measure the desired length for the finished skirt, from waist to finished edge. Add two and 1/4-inches to this measurement for the waistband. Measure the desired length from the bottom tip of one of the neckties and place a pin to mark the spot. Cut straight across at the pin. Repeat with the rest of the ties.
- 3). Layout the cut neck ties on a flat surface. Spread the ties in the formation of a circle and arrange the various colors and patterns, until you reach a combination that is pleasing to the eye.
- 4). Thread the sewing machine with thread matching the dominant color of the ties. Pin the first two ties together with a very narrow overlap, less than 1/8-inch. Sew together using a straight stitch. Repeat with the rest of the ties until the last two are sewn together.
- 5). Stitch around the top edge of the waistband of the skirt at the edge, using a zigzag stitch to prevent the cut edge from unraveling. Fold over one inch at the cut edge. Pin into place. Stitch around the circumference of the skirt, first close to the folded edge, and then again, one inch lower down, but stop sewing one inch before meeting the start of the circumference.
- 6). Cut a piece of elastic the length of your waist measurement plus two inches. Insert a safety pin into one end of the elastic and thread it through the waistband, starting at the gap left in Step 5. Pull the elastic all the way around and sew the two ends together. Sew the gap closed with the sewing machine.
