With rumors swirling about a Batman movie to be released in 2011, Batman fans are a buzz with predictions on which villains will be used and who will star in the movie. But wait a minute, before we all get carried away; let's look at what we've seen so far in modern, live action Batman movies. Some have been outstanding, some have been awful. So what is the magical combination that will make the next film a hit? The only way to find out is to look back at what we've seen so far and figure out what works and what does not.

Batman and Batman Returns: The Tim Burton Versions

These films were successful and generally well received. Tim Burton has an ability to create visually amazing movies and along with some very talented actors such as Jack Nicholson, Michelle Pfeiffer and Michael Keaton, these films were entertaining while delivering a different take on a traditional hero flick. The success here was that these movies weren't just another comic book turned movie, they were something more; they were a different point of view on the entire hero genre.

Batman Forever and Batman & Robin: Joel Schumacher's Turn

It's funny that the original goal behind these movies was to create a more traditional hero movie, a departure from the fantastical images created by Burton. These movies might as well have been titled Batman Bad and Batman Worse. They are the Batman films that have been the most critically trashed of all the Batman movies, and if you've seen them it is no secret why. It is as if these films attempted to recapture the campy nature of the 1960s TV series, even including blatant homosexual overtones. But this wasn't gay pride; instead movie goers were subjected to meaningless crotch and butt shots in Batman and Robin. These movies did not work because real Batman fans want the franchise to be taken seriously, not shown as one giant mockery.

Batman Begins and The Dark Knight: Best Batman Movies So Far!

After the gigantic failure of Batman and Robin, Schumacher was out and director/writer Christopher Nolan was in. Creating films that overall were regarded as being "darker" than the previous Batman movies, this reboot of the franchise was just what Batman fans had been waiting for. The stories were interesting and original. The characters were well developed. Best of all, these movies have left Batman fans hungry for more.

This brings us to today, when plans for a sequel to The Dark Knight are rumored to be in the works. Will it be another success? Or will it simply rehash the same old Batman story we've already seen? As long as they DO create a visually interesting movie with decent characters and a real plot and DON'T return to the campy 1960s version, the next chapter in the franchise should be awesome.
