How to Unclog a Toilet in Minutes
- 1). Place newspapers or old towels around the base of the toilet to catch any overflow.
- 2). Stop water from flowing into the toilet to prevent an overflow. If it looks like your toilet may overflow, then remove the tank lid and prevent the flapper from rising. Place something on top of it if you have to, then turn off the water valve at the back of the toilet.
- 3). Pour two cups of hot water mixed with one tablespoon of dish-washing detergent into the toilet bowl to help break up the clog. Allow it to sit for a few minutes.
- 4). Warm up your plunger by holding it under hot, running water. Hot water makes the plunger more flexible, which creates a better seal.
- 5). Place the plunger in the toilet bowl and form a seal over the exit hole. Push the plunger up and down a few times with even strokes in each direction. Remove the plunger and turn the water valve back on. Flush the toilet. If it is still clogged, repeat all the steps until the clog is clear.
