How to Rev Higher Than Normal When Accelerating

    • 1). Notice your vehicle's tachometer. The tachometer is generally the most prevalent gauge in the dash pod along with the speedometer. The tachometer monitors the engine revs and displays them in revolutions per minute, or rpm. Notice the red zone indicated at the high end of the tachometer. This is known as the engine redline, and indicates the maximum rpm value to which the engine can be safely revved.

    • 2). Drive your vehicle to a public roadway on which it is safe and legal to rev the engine to a high rpm value. If your vehicle is equipped with an automatic transmission, simply depress the accelerator pedal fully. There may be a slight lag in acceleration, as the transmission is required to downshift gears. If you depress the accelerator pedal fully, the transmission will allow the engine to rev to its rpm redline. The process is the same for vehicles equipped with a manual transmission, except you have to manually change the gears yourself.

    • 3). Ensure that you shift before the rpm redline if your car is equipped with a manual transmission. Most engines are equipped with a rev limiter which cuts off fuel flow to the engine when the rpm redline is reached. However, sustaining revs at the fuel cutout limit can still damage vital engine parts. Automatic transmissions are pre-programmed to shift before the engine reaches the fuel cutout limit.
